It was never meant to be Mother. I changed the piece 3 times, and I couldn't understand why it wasn't working the way I wanted it to. Each time, it told a story that wasn't mine. It felt forced.
I had just gotten off the phone with my mother, who's unwell, and I had a vision come to me as clear as day. I needed to create a piece that represented my mother and motherhood in general. The simplicity and the complexities. The ugliness and the beauty. The different curves and details of motherhood that take us on a journey we never thought were possible. This time, it felt right. By the end of creating her, I literally fell to the floor in sheer and utter exhaustion, taking into account that she was 3 different and COMPLETE art pieces beforehand. I was beat. Exhausted and overwhelmed, yet grateful and invigorated. Yes, just like motherhood.
I dedicate this piece to my own mother and all the mothers out there.
My mother, through her incredible strength and resilience, has taught me that there is not a challenge too big I can not overcome. My mother, somehow by the grace of God, managed to find the strength to live after burying her son but didn't live for herself. She lived for us.
Mum, there aren't enough words to articulate and none more powerful than simply, i love you.
That's how "Mother" was born.
